Lower Austria Police Intercept Massive Illegal Fireworks Cache
Just hours before the 2026 countdown, the Lower Austrian State Police (LPD NÖ) have successfully removed over 200 kilograms of illegal pyrotechnics from the streets. The seizure occurred during a targeted operation in districts bordering the Czech Republic, where investigators intercepted several vehicles transporting high-powered explosives destined for the black market.
As visitors flock to Lower Austria to discover its rich history, this police action serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers behind unauthorized New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The “Black Market” Threat
The confiscated items primarily consisted of Grade F3 and F4 explosives, including the notorious “Cobra” and “Dum Bum” brands. These are professional-grade pyrotechnics that require specialized training and licenses to handle.
- The Risk: Unlike consumer fireworks, these items can cause devastating injuries, including limb loss and permanent deafness.
- The Law: Possession of these items without a license is a federal offense under the Austrian Pyrotechnics Act.
Fines and Safety Reminders
The LPD NÖ has warned that “zero tolerance” will be shown tonight.
- Fines: Using or possessing illegal pyrotechnics can result in administrative fines of up to €3,600.
- Zones: Fireworks are strictly prohibited near hospitals, churches, and animal shelters across all nine federal states.
With the flu wave currently stretching hospital resources thin, emergency services are pleading with the public to stick to legal, “CE-certified” fireworks purchased during today’s final shop opening hours.
