Austria’s Largest Corn Maze Reopens With Music Theme

Austria’s biggest corn maze has opened for its third season in Klein-Meiseldorf, a small village in Lower Austria’s Horn district, giving families across the country a new excuse for a summer day trip.

Spanning roughly 11 hectares, about the size of 16 football fields, the “Kukuruz-Labyrinth” bills itself as the largest maize maze in the country. This year’s theme is music, with the maze’s paths, puzzle stations, and design elements all built around a musical thread running through the walk.

Months of planning, hours of planting

Farmer Michael Andres, who has run the maze for three consecutive years, starts preparation as early as January. The design begins as a hand-drawn sketch on paper before being digitized and mapped with precise coordinates. Those coordinates then guide the seeding equipment, which knows exactly where to plant maize and where to leave paths clear.

Despite months of digital planning, the physical planting itself moves fast: the entire field is laid out in about three hours once conditions are right.

A growing trend among Austrian farmers

Andres is far from alone. Similar mazes have opened this season across the country, including in Wels-Waidhausen in Upper Austria and Bierbaum bei Bad Blumau in Styria, part of a broader pattern of Austrian farmers turning maize fields into family attractions as an additional source of income alongside traditional crop farming.

The Klein-Meiseldorf maze includes puzzle stations and trivia challenges woven into the walk, aimed at both children and adults, and organizers have previously incorporated shapes into the maze design itself, including outlines of Austria and Lower Austria visible from above.

Planning a visit

The maze is open daily through the end of summer. Families visiting the region can pair the trip with other Lower Austria attractions in the Waldviertel area, known for its forests, lakes, and historic towns. For visitors planning ahead, Austria’s official tourism board lists seasonal events and attractions across all nine states.
