Trump Dispatches Envoys Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv in Bid to Revive Peace Talks
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are traveling to Eastern Europe to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, carrying a fresh American proposal aimed at opening negotiations to end the war.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump stated that his administration dispatched the negotiators to assess whether a diplomatic breakthrough remains possible between the warring nations.
“I sent Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner… to see whether or not we can get something done, and there may be a good chance that we’ll do it,” President Trump said during the briefing.
First Visit to Kyiv Amid Escalating Strikes
According to diplomatic itineraries reported by Russian state agency TASS and U.S. media, Witkoff and Kushner are slated to hold meetings in Moscow before traveling to Kyiv on Sunday. While the duo previously held late-night discussions with Putin in Moscow, this mission marks their first-ever visit to the Ukrainian capital since assuming diplomatic roles under the Trump administration.
President Zelenskyy confirmed the upcoming consultations, stating that Ukrainian authorities are coordinating logistically to make the visit as constructive as possible. Zelenskyy called for mutual restraint during the talks, proposing a temporary pause on air strikes by both sides to secure the American delegation’s travel safety.
The diplomatic mission comes during an intense escalation of long-range air warfare across the region, following large-scale drone strikes targeting the Moscow region and retaliatory missile bombardments. Kyiv itself has faced nine consecutive days of heavy drone and missile strikes, including a recent strike targeting the headquarters of Ukraine’s SBU security service.
Regional concerns over regional airspace stability were further heightened last week following an emergency military jet scramble when a light plane flew toward a Hungarian nuclear plant.
- Envoys Assigned: Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
- Itinerary: Kremlin meetings in Moscow, followed by bilateral talks with President Zelenskyy in Kyiv.
- Diplomatic First: Marks the envoys’ first official visit to Kyiv since taking office.
- Humanitarian Context: Trump cited military losses averaging 25,000 casualties per month as primary motivation for urgency.
- Security Commitments: Washington requested safety assurances from both belligerents regarding air operations during the mission.
Diplomatic Obstacles and Low Expectations
Despite the high-profile nature of the delegation, Western intelligence officials and Kremlin-adjacent sources caution that expectations for a rapid breakthrough remain low.
Trump dismissed queries regarding whether the proposal includes Ukrainian territorial concessions, framing the administration’s initiative as an “idea for peace.” The President attributed past stagnation primarily to personal animosity between the leadership in Moscow and Kyiv.
“It’s a personality problem in Russia-Ukraine,” Trump remarked. “You have President Zelenskyy and President Putin; they truly hate each other… and it’s getting in the way.”
Meanwhile, international attention remains fixed on whether the Kremlin will adjust its maximalist demands as the American envoys initiate their initial talks in Moscow.
