Snow Chaos in Italy: Record “Neuschnee” Triggers Travel Warnings for Austrians

A massive winter storm has transformed Northern Italy into a winter wonderland and a logistical nightmare over the last 24 hours. With record-breaking “Neuschnee” (fresh snow) falling across the Southern Alps, thousands of Austrian holidaymakers are facing blocked roads, power outages, and extreme avalanche risks.

Up to One Meter of Fresh Snow

The Dolomites and South Tyrol have borne the brunt of the storm. In some high-altitude areas, weather stations recorded nearly 100 cm of new snow since Sunday evening. While ski resorts are celebrating the arrival of “white gold” for the New Year, civil defense authorities in Italy have issued emergency warnings for local residents and tourists.

Impact on Trans-Alpine Travel

For Austrians, the biggest impact is felt on the roads. The Brenner Pass (A13) and the Reschen Pass have seen significant slowdowns. Italian authorities have implemented strict “winter equipment” checks, and several smaller mountain passes connecting Austria to Italy have been closed entirely due to the high risk of avalanches and fallen trees.

Travel Tip: If you are traveling between Innsbruck and South Tyrol today, expect delays of at least 2–3 hours and ensure your vehicle is equipped with snow chains.

Avalanche Danger at Critical Levels

Following the heavy snowfall, the avalanche warning level has been raised to Level 4 (High) on a scale of 5. Experts warn that the fresh snow has not yet bonded with the old snow layer, making “slabs” extremely unstable. Off-piste skiing is strongly discouraged in the Italian Alps for the next 48 hours.
