Austria Approves Siemens ‘Vectron Dual Mode’ for Borderless Rail Freight with Germany

Austria has officially become the second country after Germany to authorize Siemens’ Vectron Dual Mode locomotives for cross-border rail operations, marking a significant step in the modernization of European freight transport. The approval, announced this week, allows for seamless locomotive use between the Austrian and German networks, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming engine changes at the border.

Bridging the Gap

The locomotives, manufactured at Siemens Mobility’s Munich-Allach plant, are designed to solve a persistent logistical headache: the “last mile” gap. By combining powerful electric traction with a diesel engine, the Vectron Dual Mode can operate under overhead wires on main lines and switch to diesel power on non-electrified branch lines or sidings.

Equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS) Baseline 3.6, the fleet ensures compliance with the latest safety and interoperability standards required by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and German authorities.

First Deployment

Austrian regional operator Stern & Hafferl Verkehr has already received the first dual-authorized locomotives, signaling immediate deployment in freight operations.

“This authorization reflects Austria’s commitment to strengthening its rail freight sector,” a transport ministry official noted. “By removing technical barriers at the border, we increase the competitiveness of rail against road transport.”

Economic and Environmental Impact

The hybrid approach offers flexibility that is expected to reduce emissions and improve efficiency.
