Lieutenant General Harald Vodosek Appointed New Chief of Austria’s Armed Forces

The Austrian Ministry of Defense has officially announced the appointment of Lieutenant General Harald Vodosek as the new Chief of the General Staff (Chef des Generalstabes) of the Austrian Armed Forces (Bundesheer).

Vodosek, who has served as National Armaments Director and head of Directorate 5 (Procurement) since 2021, takes over the country’s highest-ranking military role following an extensive selection process. He succeeds General Rudolf Striedinger, who will officially retire at the end of September 2026 after four years leading the nation’s military.

A Career Built on Procurement and Strategic Command

Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner confirmed the appointment following personal interviews with six shortlisted high-ranking candidates evaluated by an advisory commission. As Chief of the General Staff, Vodosek will serve as the principal military advisor to the Defense Minister and oversee the strategic deployment, organization, and modernization of the armed forces.

Vodosek brings over four decades of military service to the position:

  • Military Foundation: Entered the Bundesheer in 1982 as a one-year volunteer before graduating from the Theresian Military Academy (Theresianische Militärakademie) in Wiener Neustadt.
  • Special Operations & Staff Command: Completed the 14th General Staff Officer course and served as commander of Austria’s elite special forces unit, the Jagdkommando, from 2006 to 2007.
  • International & Defense Logistics: Represented Austria at the Military Representation in Brussels and directed human resources and defense policy divisions within the Ministry of Defense.
  • Modernization Directorship: Managed major acquisition projects under the “Development Plan 2032+” (Aufbauplan 2032+), including fleet upgrades for Leopard 2A4 battle tanks, Ulan infantry fighting vehicles, AW169 Lion helicopters, and C-390 Embraer transport aircraft.

Steering the Bundesheer Through European Modernization

Addressing his appointment, Lieutenant General Vodosek emphasized that his core priority will focus on executing defense modernization plans amid evolving European security realities. His primary task will involve maintaining long-term procurement timelines while optimizing troop readiness under strict budgetary constraints.

The appointment decision was formally submitted to Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, who, as Commander-in-Chief of the Austrian Armed Forces, holds constitutional authority to execute the official commission.

Vodosek’s transition to Chief of General Staff comes as Austria continues implementing its largest military rearmament program in modern history, aiming to strengthen air defense, cyber resilience, and mechanical infantry capabilities over the coming decade.
