Austria Motorway Vignette 2026 Now Mandatory as ASFINAG Continues Camera Checks
Motorists across Austria are reminded that the 2026 motorway vignette is now in active use as the country enters the new toll year. While the 2025 vignette remains valid during a short transition period, Austria’s motorway operator ASFINAG confirms that automated enforcement systems continue to operate nationwide to ensure compliance.
The Transition Period: What Drivers Need to Know
Austria’s vignette year does not follow the calendar year. The 2026 “Apple Green” vignette became valid on 1 December 2025. To ease the transition for commuters and travelers, the previous 2025 vignette (“Sun Yellow”) remains valid until 31 January 2026.
From 1 February 2026 onward, only the 2026 vignette will be accepted on Austria’s motorway and expressway network. This transition period is a standard feature of Austria’s federal toll regulations.
2026 Pricing Structure
Following the annual consumer price index adjustment, toll rates for vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes have been updated as follows:
| Vehicle Type | 1-Day (Digital Only) | 10-Day | 2-Month | Annual |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Car | €8.60 | €11.50 | €28.90 | €96.40 |
| Motorcycle | €3.40 | €4.60 | €11.50 | €38.50 |
Motorists are advised to ensure that their vehicle details are correctly registered, particularly when using digital vignettes.
Digital vs. Adhesive Vignette: The 18-Day Rule
While adhesive (sticker) vignettes are valid immediately upon correct placement, digital vignettes purchased online by private individuals are subject to an 18-day waiting period under European consumer protection laws.
Drivers requiring immediate validity can purchase digital vignettes at authorized physical retail outlets, where the waiting period does not apply.
Automated Enforcement and Penalties
ASFINAG continues to deploy its Automated Vignette Control (SKK) system, which includes mobile and fixed camera units rotating across the motorway network. These systems verify both physical stickers and digital registrations.
Driving without a valid vignette results in a mandatory substitute toll (Ersatzmaut) of €120 for passenger cars. Failure to pay may lead to higher administrative fines.
Final Advice for Motorists
With winter travel and cross-border traffic increasing, drivers are encouraged to:
- Check vignette validity before motorway entry
- Ensure licence plate details are correct for digital vignettes
- Purchase vignettes only through official or authorized channels
Austria’s vignette system remains a key pillar of motorway funding, supporting infrastructure maintenance and road safety nationwide.
