Hundreds of engineers are reportedly working on the project, which emerged from a previously undisclosed division known as the Exploratory Design Group (XDG). XDG is working on particularly futuristic and potentially momentous “Moonshot” projects, similar to Google’s X department. Within the group, XDG is even less known to employees than the secret development work on cars and virtual reality.

The goal is not only to support existing diabetics in controlling their disease, but also to inform those who suffer from prediabetes. The technology has already been tested on hundreds of test subjects, and the proof of feasibility has thus been provided. Now it should be a matter of reducing the size of the system so that it also fits into the Apple Watch. Until then, however, an intermediate step is necessary. Accordingly, work is being done on a device that can be strapped around the arm, similar in size to an iPhone.
