Alpine Tragedy: 13-Year-Old Skier Dies in Avalanche in Sportgastein

A tragic avalanche in Sportgastein has claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy from Prague, casting a shadow over the mid-January ski season. The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, marking the second fatal avalanche in Austria this week.

According to Salzburg rescue services, the teenager was skiing off-piste (im freien Skiraum) with another minor when the snow slab released around midday. Despite the rapid intervention of mountain rescue teams and the deployment of a helicopter, the boy could not be revived after being located under the snow masses.

His companion survived the incident physically unharmed but was treated on-site for severe shock.

A Deadly Week in the Alps

This tragedy underscores the extreme volatility of current alpine conditions. It follows the death of a 58-year-old ski tourer in Tyrol on Sunday, bringing the national toll to two in just 48 days.

The current weather patterns—shifting rapidly from extreme cold of -27°C to warmer temperatures—have created unstable snow layers across the Austrian Alps. The Salzburg Avalanche Warning Service had issued alerts for the region, explicitly cautioning skiers about the fragility of the snowpack at high altitudes.

Warnings Ignored?

Sportgastein, part of the wider Gastein Valley ski area, is renowned for its high-alpine terrain and is popular among freeriders. However, experts stress that even experienced skiers face significant risks when venturing outside secured pistes during warning periods.

“Off-piste skiing requires more than just skill; it requires distinct knowledge of the terrain and the current snow profile,” a mountain rescue official stated.

Local authorities emphasized that avalanche preparedness—including carrying transceivers, probes, and shovels—is essential, but avoidance is the only guarantee of safety during high-risk periods. This warning echoes recent safety advisories issued regarding frozen lakes in Carinthia, where unstable conditions have also put lives at risk.

As Austria mourns the loss of the young visitor, officials urge all winter sports enthusiasts to strictly adhere to warning signs and remain on marked slopes.
