Violent Altercation in Innere Stadt: WEGA Arrests Suspect Following Knife Attack
A 28-year-old man is in police custody this morning following a violent incident in Vienna’s 1st District late Monday night. The altercation, which required the intervention of the WEGA special operations unit, left one person hospitalized with sharp-force injuries.
Incident at Schwedenplatz
Shortly before the public holiday began, a dispute escalated between two men in the vicinity of Schwedenplatz. According to preliminary police reports from the State Police Directorate (LPD Wien), the suspect allegedly attacked the victim with a sharp object during a heated argument.
Witnesses alerted emergency services, and the WEGA arrived on the scene within minutes to apprehend the suspect, who offered no further resistance during the arrest.
Emergency Response
The victim, a 32-year-old male, received immediate first aid from the Berufsrettung Wien for wounds to his upper body. He remains in stable condition. This incident adds to a series of recent district-level investigations, including the armed robbery in Ottakring and the concluded manhunt in Mistelbach.
Investigation Continues
The motive for the attack remains unclear. The suspect is currently being held at a police detention center. Prosecutors are expected to file formal charges of aggravated assault later today.
