Woodson Wrestler Capture 2nd

By WrestleFan

The W.T. Woodson wrestling team traveled to Hanover County outside Richmond, Virginia to take on the best of Virginia's Central region in the annual Lee-Davis Holiday Classic Wrestling Tournament on December 14 and 15, and earned 2nd place overall, behind traditional Tidewater powerhouse Hampton, but ahead of Richmond area powers Douglas Freeman, James River, Deep Run, Lee-Davis, Patrick Henry and others. Woodson's team total of 170.5 points were exceeded only by Hampton's 219.5. Depth provided the key for WT Woodson as 9 wrestlers finshed in medal standing. Other Northern Virginia Schools also fared well as Annandale and Herndon tied for 7th with 102.5 points, while West Springfield, with only a single wrestler competing, captured 15th.

Bob Hauser of WT Woodson won the title at 103 pounds to emerge as the only Northern Virginia champion, while WT Woodson's Kevin Webb at 215, and Annandale's Ricky Adams at 135, Jose Capacho at 140, Marquis Perez at 171, Jesse Kruse at 189 and West Springfield's Dan McCluskey finished as runner's up.

Lee Albert, 285, Abe Hovespain 125, Spencer Peters 160 of WT Woodson finished 3rd, as did Nick Ziegler, 130 Herndon, and Victor Njomo, 215, Annandale.

4th place finishers from Northern Virginia high schools included Mike Muldoon, 189, WT Woodson, James Neville, 215, Herndon, Brandon Jefferson, 171, Annandale, Fraser Trotter, 160, Herndon, Andrew Sells, 119, Annandale, and Josh Pike, 112, Herndon.

Woodson's Lee Mailand went undefeated, but was forced to withdraw due to injury after advancing to the Championship bout.

On December 28-29th the WT Woodson wrestlers will join 15 other Northern Virginia schools at the Battle of the Bridge tourney hosted by Woodbridge High School. The Battlefield, Brooke Point, Centreville, Chantilly, Edison, Fairfax, Freedom (Loudoun County), JEB Stuart, Lake Braddock, Liberty, Marshall, Paul VI, TC WIlliams, Washington & Lee, Woodbridge and WT Woodson High Schools will compete. The first round matches begin at noon on December 27th. Quarterfinals are scheduled at 4:00 PM and 1st round consolations begin about 6:00 PM. The second round consolations begin on Saturday at 11:00 AM. Semi-finals and Consolation quarterfinals begin at 1:00 PM. The finals are set for 6:30 PM on Saturday. Fans are welcome and encouraged to attend and see the best of Northern Virginia high school wrestling.
