Woman killed on I-95 in Springfield

An Arlington woman was killed in crash on I-95 in Springfield on May 23 at 9:34 p.m. after the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer she was driving was struck by another vehicle causing the Trailblazer to veer out of control into the Jersey wall, flipping the SUV and ejecting the woman driver.

Virginia State Police said Lavonne Aurora Canas, 23, of 401 South Joyce St. #1205, died at 10:28 p.m. at the scene, about 1.2 miles south of Edsall Road.

The car that struck Canas' vehicle was a 2008 Dodge Charger, police said. Investigators said Canas was not wearing a seatbelt and determined that she was driving recklessly. It is unknown if alcohol was involved.

According to Virginia State Police, 14 individuals were killed in vehicle crashes over the Memorial Day weekend throughout the Commonwealth.

No, she wasn't drinking that night AT ALL. She had just finished her final exam in school. She enrolled in school to obtain her Bachelor's of Science in Criminal Justice. She was going to be a police officer for Alexandria City. She was a great person, a role model and will always be missed.
