Wahl pitches Spartans to win

After a less-than-memorable pitching performance against Lake Braddock in the Patriot District tournament, West Springfield coach John James had no hesitation sending sophomore Bobby Wahl back to the mound Monday afternoon against Robinson in the Northern Region quarterfinals. Wahl showed exactly why he had James' trust, allowing just two hits, while striking out a career-high 13 in a complete-game victory.

"Last game against Lake Braddock, I didn't fare too well," said Wahl, who felt command of his fastball was the difference Monday. "I just came back out here and tried to get the confidence back. I did a pretty good job."

Wahl shut down the Robinson bats, but the Spartans weren't having much success at the plate either, and the game was still scoreless heading to the bottom of the seventh. Senior Patrick Nutbrown led off the frame with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a bunt by Jeff Haeuptle. Junior Andy Stallings came to the plate and laced a single up the middle, plating Nutbrown with the game-winning run.

"Bobby was excellent," James said. "He was pounding the zone all day. He was extremely sharp. Not a surprise to me because he's been pretty good all year. We expected to get a good performance out of him. It was just a matter of stringing some hits together and putting some runs on the board."

West Springfield will face Chantilly Wednesday night in the Northern Region semifinals at South County Secondary School. The Chargers defeated South Couny, 7-2, Monday afternoon. Jordan Johnson gave up one run in four innings of work for the win. Max Langford and Keith Morrisroe each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Justin Carwile drove in a pair of runs.
