Bridge to be named after Monroe

County officials agreed to name a new pedestrian bridge after Alec Monroe, the deceased honorary mayor of Clifton's Little Rocky Run community.

Monroe's “standard of care, loyalty and ethics provided the leadership template for others to follow in neighborhood associated government,” Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity (R) said at a May 19 meeting.

Herrity, also a Little Rocky Run resident, said Monroe – who was known as the “mayor” of the community – was instrumental in creating new walking areas in the community.

Monroe was a resident of Clifton's Little Rocky Run community for 20 years. When he passed away in February, he had served as president of the community's Board of Trustees and was known as an advocate for more trails.

The new bridge is located along Compton Road near the Little Rocky Run and Compton Heights Homeowners Association.

For many years there have been safety problems for pedestrian and bikers on that bridge,” Albert Francese, vice president of the community's Board of Trustees, said. It is now being used by people from several communities surrounding Little Rocky Run.

Francese said residents of Little Rocky Run, Compton Valley Estates and Compton Heights advocated for the bridge for years.

Sully District Supervisor Michael Frey (R) and then-Springfield District Supervisor Elaine McConnell (R) agreed to share the costs of construction.

The Little Rocky Run community is in the Springfield District but it is across from Centreville High School and borders the Sully District.
