Tyson Tunnel changes tracks

On Monday, May 19, TysonsTunnel.org held its first event since November's elections, a fund-raiser attended by about 130 supporters in McLean. According to president Scott Monett, the group netted about $5,000 from the event, which will go to administrative costs.

According to Monett, the fund-raiser is the beginning of a big change for the organization, which lost a great deal of support, including corporate backer West*Group, when the FTA initially declined to approve Dulles rail for final design earlier this year. In an attempt to appeal to the business community Monett says the group will back off on its calls for a competitive bidding process for the project and focus on the tunnel through Tysons Corner.

“We'll take a sole-source tunnel over a competitively bid aerial rail,” Monett said. He plans to take the idea to the public in a town hall meeting, to be announced, at Marshall High School.
