Lake Braddock girls win another track title

The Lake Braddock boys track team lost in heartbreaking fashion at last week's Patriot District meet, stumbling on the final relay and finishing six points behind champion West Potomac. The Bruin girls, on the other hand, had no such trouble. Lake Braddock's girls track team won its eighth straight district title, outdistancing second-place West Potomac by an astounding 102 points.

“It's a lot of fun to coach at Braddock,” Bruins coach Mike Mangan said. “The history and tradition we've had, it makes it easier for me to convince them they can do it. They want to be a part of that tradition. The girls the last few years have won by quite a few points. It takes some hard work. In general, we like to pride ourselves on having a well-rounded team.”

The Lake Braddock girls were indeed well-rounded at the district meet, placing at least two athletes in every event except the discus throw, in which they had just one place winner.

Leading the way for the Bruins was senior Melanie Akwule who had a record-breaking performance. Akwule finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.51, which broke the Patriot District meet record of 14.67 set last year by West Springfield's Trish Friederich. Akwule was far from done earning Lake Braddock points. The senior placed first in the triple jump (37-02.50), second in the long jump (18-01.50), second in the 300 hurdles (44.66) and also anchored the Bruins' district champion 4x100-meter relay team.

Freshman Becca Sinichko, who Mangan calls the fastest sprinter he's coached in a while, also had a big meet, placing first in both the 200 (25.59) and 400 (1:00.05). Liana Epstein finished first in the 1,600-meter run (5:12.90) and third in the 800 (2:20.43), while Anna Corrigan took second in the 3,200 (11:21.76).

Keon Robinson placed first in the triple jump (44-01), second in the 110 hurdles (15.34) and third in the long jump (21-01) for the Lake Braddock boys, who fell just short of their district title goal. Michael Santano added two first places in the high jump (6-00) and 300 hurdles (40.19), while Devin Edgell took first in the 800 (1:58.48).

“They fought hard and I'm proud of what they did,” Mangan said of his boys team. “That's more important than having the score come out in our favor.”
