Fairfax graduate Schmitt selected by SeahawksThe Seattle Seahawks selected Fairfax High School graduate Owen Schmitt with the 163rd pick -- a fifth-round choice -- in last weekend's NFL Draft.
Schmitt, a 6-foot-2, 247-pound fullback who served as Heisman Trophy candidate Steve Slaton's primary blocking back at West Virginia University, will look to earn a spot on special teams and possibly serve as incumbent Leonard Weaver's backup.
Athletes earn honors at Washington College
Two local athletes were honored at the Washington College Department of Athletics Awards Ceremony, which was held May 1. Junior Tim Kohlrus, a Fairfax native and Woodson graduate, was named the men's basketball team's most valuable player. The guard led Washington in scoring at 15.8 points per game and rebounding with 6.4 per game. Kohlrus scored a career-high 35 points against Goucher on Nov. 25, and recorded double-digit points in 20 games.
Junior Ben Kaplan, also a Fairfax native and Woodson graduate, was named the baseball team's most improved player. Kaplan achieved career highs in batting average (.253), runs (12), hits (21), doubles (4) RBIs (18), total bases (25) and walks (8). He had a career-high four hits against McDaniel on April 15 and scored a career-high four runs against Old Westbury on March 14.
Tryouts and Announcements
Northern Virginia Senior Softball is looking for men over 50 years old and women over 40 for a pair of seven-inning, slow-pitch softball games on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Twenty-five teams will be organized into three different conferences based on skill level. Regular season games began April 17.
