Chantilly girls, boys advance to district final
The Chantilly girls and boys lacrosse teams each advanced to Friday's Concorde District finals with wins at home Monday night. In Game 1 of the doubleheader, the Charger girls faced Oakton and came away with an 8-7 win. It was the second time in a week that Chantilly beat the Cougars by a single goal.
The Chargers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind goals from Liz Dunwoody and Brittany Griel. The teams traded goals for the rest of the first half and Chantilly took a 4-3 lead into halftime.
The Chargers extended their lead to 6-3 with two more Dunwoody goals early in the second half, and held an 8-4 advantage before three straight Oakton goals led to a frantic finish in front of the Chantilly net.
In the nightcap, the Chantilly boys won the first district semifinal in team history despite an admittedly sluggish performance. After a 10-day layoff thanks to a first-round bye in the district tournament, the Chargers looked flat early on, giving up three first-period goals and trailing 3-2 at halftime.
Chantilly changed its offensive approach in the second half and pulled out a 6-4 win behind four goals from senior Corey Aferiat.
The Chargers will look to win the first district title in team history when they face Oakton Friday night at Robinson.
