Justin Spring named to U.S. Olympic Men's Gymnastics team:

Burke resident Justin Spring has been named to the U.S. Olympic Men's Gymnastics team. He will travel to Beijing along with five other team members for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Spring began competing in gymnastics in 1987 and graduated from Lake Braddock Secondary School in 2002. He then attended the University of Illinois where he was a 12-time All-American.

The Olympic Games are scheduled to begin August 8.

Robinson baseball product drafted by the Atlanta Braves:

Paul Clemens, a 2006 graduate of Robinson Secondary School, was selected in the seventh round (220th overall) by the Atlanta Braves in Major League Baseball's first-year player draft, which occurred at the beginning of June.

A Burke resident, Clemens has spent the past two years at Louisburg College (NC) and had signed a letter of intent to play at East Carolina.

In his first season at Louisburg, Clemens posted an impressive 7-2 record with 61 strikeouts in only 70 innings of work. This past season, Clemens went 4-3 with a 4.67 ERA in 10 appearances (8 starts).

Over the past couple of years, Clemens, a wiry and electric-armed right hander, has worked diligently with pitching coach Jerry Edwards to expand his repertoire. Already sporting a fastball with mid-90s velocity, the hurler has worked on his curveball and changeup as complements, and his efforts have not gone unnoticed. The ace of an All-Division I signee rotation, Clemens was the only pitcher to get nabbed in the recent draft.

Glory's Serrano finds perfection:

Washington Glory right-hander Desiree Serrano -- last year's National Pro Fastpitch Softball Pitcher of the Year -- threw the first perfect game in team history over the weekend. Serrano's perfect game came on Sunday as the Glory grabbed a 3-0 win over the Venezuelan National Team and the four-game series, 3-1, at the Westfield Sports Complex.

But Serrano's gem wasn't the only re-writing of the record books that Washington did over the weekend. In Saturday's 8-2 win, Oli Keohohou tied the league's career home run record with her 27th all-time blast in the third inning and later took the record with a grand slam.

Annual game showcases region's football talent:

Sixty-seven points may have only been less shocking than football in June. Still, both the East and West squads had a ball during last Friday's Northern Region Football Classic.

In its fourth year of existence, the event was held at West Springfield High School and divided the Northern Region's four districts in half, pairing the Liberty and Patriot (East) to face the National and Concorde (West).

Edison graduate Ben Barber, who starred at quarterback this past season but will play wide receiver at Virginia Tech in the fall, garnered Most Valuable Player honors as receiver for the victorious West squad, which led 31-3 at halftime and closed with a 44-23 win.

Former Lake Braddock star Keon Robinson (Shepherd) was named the East squad's Most Valuable Player as he switched gears from his typical receiver position and threw a pair of second-half touchdown passes.
