Vienna's Roe becomes a King:
In last weekend's National Hockey League entry draft, which was held at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Vienna resident Garrett Roe was taken in the seventh round (183rd overall) by the Los Angeles Kings. Roe will be a sophomore forward for the St. Cloud State Huskies this upcoming season, while he notched 45 points, 18 goals during his freshman campaign.
Aeroterm Yankees win McLean Little League titles:
The Aeroterm Yankees defeated Dr. Edward Nelson's Phillies, 13-7, to win the McLean Little League AAA City Series championship. The Yankees' 9-4 record clinched them the National League title as well.
In the city championship game, the Phillies jumped out to a 5-2 lead after two innings, but the Yankees exploded for five more runs of their own in the third. The Phillies tied the score at 7-7 in the top of the fourth, but the Yankees regained the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on a two-run single by Cameron Marrapese. The Yankees scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the six-run victory. They will now advance to the Starliper tournament, which is comprised of other local Little League champions.
Area swimming roundup:
The Great Falls Rapids swim team started their season with a win over Burke Station, 224-178. Two-time winners included James Cutler, Mary Liz Elliot, Jason Guidi, Annie Kemmerer, Will Kemmerer, Maggie Kovacs, Elizabeth Longosz and Max Wingo.
The RiverBend StingRays lost to International Country Club, 282-233, but Micaela Grassi (9-10) broke the RiverBend 25-meter butterfly record for the second time this season with a time of 18.53 seconds. Two-time winners included Ryan Windus and Patrick Duff.
The Langley Wildthings fell to the Mansion House Piranhas, 227-175, though nearly two-thirds of the Langley squad clocked personal-best times. Zach Johnson, Jacqueline Litschewski and Brian DeMocker all won two events.
The Hamlet Green Feet opened the NVSL season on Saturday with a convincing 243-159 win over the Lee Graham Dolphins. Leading the double winners were Blake Rainey, William Gent, Ian Rainey and Ryan Lichtenfels.
In RSTA action, the Autumnwood Piranhas bested the Lake Newport Lightning, 580-476. Hugh Curran, Steven Gasparis, Michael Le, Robin Brazier and Mia Chernick all won three events for Autumnwood, while Conor McLaughlin, Ryan McLaughlin and Omar Zaki won three events for Lake Newport.
The Lake Anne Stingrays swam past the Glade Gators. 564-454. Triple events winners for the Stingrays included Kathryn Paiewonsky, Jordyn Moder, Tope Oladimeji, Andrew Satyshur and Kat Mckinstry. For the Gators, Tyler Ellis, Olivia Wolfe, Morgan E. Barlow and Jonathan Christensen won three times.
The Lake Audubon Barracudas topped the North Hills Hurricanes, 655-452. Joseph Livaudis and Rachel Swarts won two events for North Hills, while Seretha McHugh, John Hughes, Shane Scoggin, Brenne Gregory and Alissa Avilov won three events for Lake Audodon.
In the final meet, the Ridge Heights Sharks got past the Newbridge Dolphins 595-428. Eight swimmers won three events for the Sharks, including Brendan With, Andrew McClellan, Kati Imel, Harrison Hughes, Emily Sennett, Brad Dillon, Gabriel Perez-Ferrer and Jasmine Jones. Celia and Eric Compton won three events for the Dolphins.

Academy International will host a week-long lacrosse academy for girls at Cooper Middle School in McLean from 5 until 8 p.m. on Aug. 11-15. The academy, which will feature renowned coaches from Canada and Britain, will group players by age and skill level to customize training.
