Glory's Serrano finds perfection:
Washington Glory right-hander Desiree Serrano -- last year's National Pro Fastpitch Softball Pitcher of the Year -- threw the first perfect game in team history over the weekend. Serrano's perfect game came on Sunday as the Glory grabbed a 3-0 win over the Venezuelan National Team and the four-game series, 3-1, at Westfield Sports Complex.
But Serrano's gem wasn't the only re-writing of the record books that Washington did over the weekend. In Saturday's 8-2 win, Oli Keohohou tied the league's career home run record with her 27th all-time blast in the third inning and later took the record with a grand slam.
Annual game showcases region's football talent:
Sixty-seven points may have only been less shocking than football in June. Still, both the East and West squads had a ball during last Friday's Northern Region Football Classic.
In its fourth year of existence, the event was held at West Springfield High School and divided the Northern Region's four districts in half, pairing the Liberty and Patriot (East) to face the National and Concorde (West).
Chantilly graduate Mike Quigg recovered a fumble to jump start what would become a 31-point first half for the West, which eventually went on to win, 44-23.
Chantilly's Austin Decker (Virginia Tech) and Westfield's Billy Samson (Randolph-Macon) rotated under center, as each tossed touchdown passes in the opening half -- with one of Decker's two going to Westfield graduate David Kruchko (Virginia Tech). Fellow Bulldog David Skahn (Christopher Newport) kicked five extra points and added a 33-yard field goal.
Centreville's Jamey McClendon returned a second-half interception for a touchdown and fellow Wildcat Donnell Carpenter provided several vicious hits.
Chantilly Purple Fire win championship:
The Chantilly Youth Association's Purple Fire, a U-19 girls soccer team, won the Suburban Friendship League's Division 3 title on June 8. In their preliminary game on June 7, the Purple Fire beat Loudoun, 5-0, behind goals from Chelsea Schlademan, Jessie Lawrenson, Jenn Hollm, Siri Flatlandsmo and Jenny Puchrik.
In the final on June 8, Lawrenson and Puchrik – the team's leading scorers – each netted another goal, as did Stephanie Ball and Rachel Jones in a 4-1 victory over Springfield. Ashley Portch and Sam Weisman, the Purple Fire's center midfielders, assisted on the majority of the goals during their tournament run.
The Purple Fire advanced to the title game of the Fairfax Police Youth Club Father's Day tournament the following weekend, but lost to Glade Valley. Lawrenson was named tournament MVP.
SYA team captures lacrosse championship:
The SYA U-15B-1 boys lacrosse team (12-2) captured the NVYLL championship for their bracket on the weekend of June 7-8. Playing in extreme heat, they beat both Loudoun West and Loudoun East before toppling a tough Chantilly team, 6-5, in the championship game.

A record-setting day for the Piranhas:

Despite the loss, new team records were set by Ricky Hayden (Boys 15-18, backstroke), Lee Payton (Boys 13-14, fly) and Drew Carinci (Boys 11-12, freestyle).Carinci's mark broke a record from 1991 and Payton also won the Boys 13-14 breaststroke.
