Murphy selected as head coach at Centreville

Centreville High School announced Monday that Drew Murphy has been selected as its new head boys varsity basketball coach, replacing Brian Doyle, who led the Wildcats for three years. Murphy spent the 2007-08 season as an associate head coach with Doyle after five years as head coach at McLean.

"I'm certainly excited about the opportunity," said Murphy, who is also the Special Education Department Chair at Centreville. "It all fell into place in the last few weeks. The timing was perfect and the situation is great. I'm pleased that the administration is giving me the chance."

Doyle said that a thorough search was made to fill the vacancy left when he accepted an assistant principal position at Centreville, but it was very evident that Murphy was the best choice as his successor.

"[Director of Student Activities Jimmy Sanabria and Principal Mike Campbell] opened up the search, but it just happened that the best candidate was here," Doyle said of Murphy. "I think he's highly qualified. He made a lot of progress at McLean and got that program headed in the right direction. I thought it was a coup when I convinced him to come here."

Murphy enjoyed taking a step back last season without the responsibilities of a head coach and learning from a veteran like Doyle, but he is eager to get back into the driver's seat. With a year of experience with the Wildcats already under his belt, Murphy feels he can make a smooth transition into the head coaching position.

"There will be a period of adjustment, but with my background with the kids, I think it will be smoother," he said. "I know them, I've built a relationship."

Doyle is confident Murphy will be able to continue the progress displayed by the young Wildcats team down the stretch last season.

"I certainly feel like the way we finished with the young guys, the opportunity is there to take the next step," said Doyle, who is open to being an assistant on Murphy's staff.

Added Murphy, "I think we ended the year on a good note. We've got a lot of guys coming back. We want to continue to get better and compete for a district championship. It's something I think is attainable in the near future."
