Kennedy family hosts Obama fund-raiser in McLean

Democrats gathered at the McLean home of Ethel Kennedy, Hickory Hill, Wednesday night for a private fund-raiser for presidential candidate and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

The $28,500-per-person dinner featured a speech by the candidate and remarks from Max Kennedy. The event raised more for Obama than “ever raised for any candidate in the history of this household,” Max Kennedy said.

"This is the kind of candidate that I've been waiting for my entire life," Kennedy said of Obama.

As he has been doing at appearances around the country since securing the Democratic nomination for president, Obama reflected on the “extraordinary” primary and said the goal now is “to unify – and win.”

"Not just win an election but win back this country's heart and soul,” he said, speaking about individuals who are struggling to buy gas, find a job an keep food on the table in this tough economy.

Obama said implementing a universal health care plan will be first among his goals if he is elected president, but noted, “It's going to take effort. It's not going to be easy.”

After speaking for about 20 minutes, Obama took questions from guests.

The senator's campaign also launched a new 60-second television ad in Virginia that is slated to begin airing Friday.
