Malm resigns from Westfield

Westfield boys lacrosse coach Gary Malm has resigned along with his entire coaching staff. Malm cited irreconcilable differences with the Westfield administration as the reason for his decision.

"Some things were said that were untrue," Malm said. "They didn't recant their statement. False statements were made about my staff. I felt it was a direct attack on my integrity."

According to Malm, he received an email from Westfield Principal Tim Thomas "regarding my coaching ability, tactic- and decision-making." Malm and his staff confronted Thomas about these allegations, at which point he was shown three emails from disgruntled parents, which according to Malm were not able to "substantiate strongly-worded 'complaints' he had sighted in his email to us."

Malm asked Thomas to recant his statements, but his request was refused, at which point he and his four assistant coaches tendered their resignations. Malm and two of his assistants had been coaching together for 12 years.

Thomas was unable to be reached for comment, but responded with an email statement.

"I really have no comment and I wish coach Malm nothing but the best of luck in all of his future endeavors," Thomas wrote. "I appreciate his efforts during his time as a coach at Westfield."

Malm was head coach at Westfield for four seasons, and has been coaching for 12 years in all.

"It was a tough decision for me to make," said Malm, who plans to take a couple years off before possibly returning to coaching. "I enjoy the kids. It's a passion for all of us. I feel bad for the kids, but it's something I had to do. I wanted to leave on my own terms. I don't feel they [the administration] appreciated us."
