A singular focus
All they wanted to do was to beat the Southwestern Youth Association East All-Stars.That's it, honest. Everything else has just been a bonus.
And after knocking off their rival twice, the Chantilly American 10- and 11-year-old All-Stars are living on borrowed time.
“Our goal was to beat SYA East and to win something in our district,” said coach Raghu Mani, whose team knocked off SYA East in the semifinals and finals of the District 10 tournament. “I told them, 'This is all a bonus. Enjoy it and keep working hard.'”
Since the team was announced on June 16, practice has been held – sometimes for nearly 3 1/2 hours – every single day. Though it's hard work, the players' efforts have been rewarded.
Mani's group has breezed through the state tournament in Virginia Beach. With five consecutive wins, Chantilly American has been able to wait as several teams in the bottom half of the bracket battle to challenge them for the title.
“We really need to put our best effort in,” said team member Lukas Foley. “We need to bring our 'A-plus-plus' game, and everybody really needs to work hard.”
After fending off a late surge from Chesterfield to earn a 3-2 win on Monday, Chantilly American, friends and family all traveled north for the two-day break. Players practiced on Tuesday and Wednesday, while parents could rest and recover as well.
Bani was quick to point out that none of this would've been possible without those who support the team. Whether it's meant grabbing a rake or feeding a tee, the outpour of support has been incredible.
“It's been such a wonderful experience for the kids, and I'm sure they'll remember it for the rest of their lives,” Bani said. “Win or lose, the boys should be proud of their accomplishments.”
Chantilly American will play West Springfield -- 6-3 winners over Chesterfield on Wednesday morning -- on Thursday at 10 a.m. Check www.FairfaxTimes.com for a recap of the championship game.
