Dulles chamber names new chairman
Georgia Graves, CEO of telecommunications company Bridgman Communications, has been named chairman of the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce.Graves, formerly the chamber's vice chair, says she plans to strengthen the roots that the chamber has put down into the Route 28 corridor in its last few years of growth.
"The chamber's strength and roots are firmly planted in the Town of Herndon. That is their history and their joy," she said.
"It was visionary for the chamber to reach out to those in the corridor, such as Chantilly and Centreville, over the last few years and offer them something to belong to. What I would like to do now is ground it as much as possible, and make sure the roots are really strong and firm. We have been through a lot of growth and it's now time to fine-tune the process."
Graves said she plans to accomplish this goal by looking at the chamber's committees and "polishing everything" through board member initiatives.
She says she understands the perception that the Town of Herndon might have toward the chamber's recent growth, and says strengthening that particular relationship is also part of her overall goal.
"I understand that Herndon doesn't want to see so much change that it feels that the center might be shifting," Graves said. "I think that by expressing its concerns, the Town brought awareness to the fact that we need to know that Herndon is as strong as it was before."
Graves, who is originally from the Hampton Roads area, began her career as a teacher and transitioned into the telecom business in the late 1970s when she took a position with American Telecom. She is a former chairman of the Reston Chamber of Commerce and is also currently active in the Loudoun chamber because her business is in Dulles.
She teaches a music class for two hours a week at Linton Hall School in Manassas and is passionate about being a drum major in the American Originals Drum and Fife Corps, a position she has held since 1991.
