Extra time

Next Tuesday morning, some 170,000 students will head to Fairfax County public schools. We hedge that with the word "some" because the number is always changing as a result of our remarkable growth.
The point here is not the number of students but the number of opportunities for accidents involving those students.
When school opens, the big and slow yellow buses will return to the highways. Sure, they're annoying when they crawl along ahead of you, stopping repeatedly to pick up or drop off youngsters while you fume about the one-lane road.
But remember: These buses are full of children. Many are very young children out on their own for the first time. Many don't quite remember that they should look both ways before crossing. They just go.
So it's up to each of us to be alert and mindful in the coming days. The child you don't hit may well be your own. Think about it.
