Local 4-year-old advances to semifinals of 'America's Got Talent'
Four-year-old Kaitlyn Maher of Ashburn has advanced to the semi-finals of the "America's Got Talent" television show."America's Got Talent" is the only televised talent competition open to anyone of any age, and the precocious preschooler wowed the judges last Tuesday with a rendition of the song, "When You Wish Upon a Star."
"This is our third season, and Kaitlyn is without a doubt the cutest kid that we've had on the show. Four years old and not only looks adorable but can really hold a tune," said James Sunderland, an executive producer of the show.
Maher has already passed the New York audition stage and the "boot camp" in Las Vegas round. She will now advance to Hollywood for the semi-finals and a chance at the $1 million grand prize.
"I made it to Hollywood!" an ecstatic Maher exclaimed on Thursday night's show after being told that she would be one of 40 semifinalists to advance to the live performance round of the show. New episodes of the show aired on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week.
A video of Maher's New York audition has already garnered more than 2 million hits on YouTube.
"Kaitlyn is so small on stage, but she really fills the room," said Chad Redick of the Conservatory Ballet in Reston, which Maher attends once a week.
The 2008 Summer Olympics have put "America's Got Talent" on hiatus, but the show will resume Tuesday, Aug. 26.
The million-dollar winner will be announced during the live finale on Wednesday, Oct 1.

It is a sad that the parents felt compelled to enter this baby in a national contest and even more so that the judges felt compelled to send her along to Los Angeles. It is a gimmick and is shameful that really talented singers were passed over for her. I am really disappointed in this show. There should be an age minimum and limit. Also, freaks like transvestite lip sinkers should not be allowed. What hypocrisy.
