Gas to be restored to condo community this week
After nearly a week of cold showers and eating out, residents of the Springfield Green Condominiums can expect to have hot water by Thursday, August 7 and their gas turned back on by Thursday, August 14.
The condos are located near Brookfield Plaza along Backlick Road in Springfield.
Gas leaks at the 1960's era complex have been rampant for roughly 20 years, said Brian Felts, a field engineer who oversees improvements for the management company for the property.
The aging gas mains were not owned or maintained by Washington Gas for nearly half a century, but control was turned over to the company after the condominium board passed a recent measure, Felts said.
"If we can get them hot water soon, I think they'll be fine," Felts said, adding that a propane company will come to the property next week to hook up the hot water heaters with gas.
As of last Monday, Washington Gas contractors were installing 900 feet of new, quarter-inch thick plastic gas mains.
"If I don't have hot water and can't cook for much longer, they (the management company) can pay for my hotel bill," said resident Alex Urritia.
