Once upon a time in Vienna ...
Toys are displayed in wooden carousels covered in Christmas lights or crowd the branches of papier-mache trees. When you visit |
According to Porter, some customers travel long distances to shop in her dollhouse section. Porter has an extensive collection in her own home of her favorite items from the store.
"We make it OK for adults to buy toys," Porter said.
Most of the displays of toys in Once Upon a Time reach to the ceiling, and the store has the pleasantly cluttered feel of an overstuffed used bookstore.
"You can only put so much in one place, but we're getting good at this," Porter said.
They should be good at it.
This Halloween, the store will have been fascinating the children of Vienna for 25 years. Porter started the store with three other women, all mothers.
"We just thought it would be fun. We never thought it would last this long," Porter said.
Over the years, Once Upon a Time has celebrated its anniversary by having cookouts and characters from story books in the store.
But, since this is the store's silver anniversary, Porter is planning a few special events, including a drawing for prizes every day leading up to Halloween and a 25-percent off sale the last five days of the month.
"It's just going to be fun," Porter said.
